Wolfed down this book even at an airport and on a loud plane (got it at an airport bookstore!)
Also was shocked it wasn’t older?
It’s a full blown classic ghost story with fantastic tension and building dread, perfectly teasing out mysteries and things unsaid.
I just have two problems with it, one of which is likely moreso due to having seen the film over a decade ago by now:
1. Once the haunted house is finally arrived at, there is simply too much too quickly insofar as the paranormal goes, and it kinda dulls all the great build up we just had.
2. The actual clues presented are pretty minimal and also paint a fairly obvious picture even individually, so there’s not much fun in speculating.
Generally really liked it, though. Reading ANY book in five days is nuts for me. And that’s WITH jet lag!

I was told this was a classic ghost story written in the style of a Jane Austen book. When I read it, it was a classic ghost story written like a Jane Austen novel. *shrugs*

I had many things to say about the Woman in Black. First off that it's a fantastic fast paced dip into victorian horror and the ghost stories of that era (the opening set during Christmas was a nice homage to the genre). It's almost complete fan service to that era of horror writing. With one chapter even being titled 'Whistoe and I'll come to you'. A horror story written in the time period the book is set. For me the book wrapped up far too quickly and didn't dive into the questions asked early on. In my opinion I much prefer the soft rewrite of this story in the play/theatre version, 2nd to that I enjoyed the movie with Daniel Radcliffe much more, with certain plot points added that improved the story of the book (I'm sorry to say. My opinion). Still, if you're looking for a spooky outing that's not too long and want to experience the odd creepy sensation. Visit the woman in black (at your own peril.....ooooooooohhhhh my attempt at a ghost noise. Soz)
That final line took this from a 4 to a 5 for me. Haunting, chilling, just what I needed for November.

Feels like classic literature, but doesn't read like one (which is positive). Really loved the gothic vibes and the overall eeriness of the novel. Beautiful and vivid descriptions of the surroundings (actually of everything).
