I fell under the charm of this novel from the start : I don't know about you, but I love a good novel with a house that attracts, mystifies and charms me.
Add a ghost to the mix, different characters living at different times with interweaving stories that lead to the ultimate revelation at the end and a few references here and there (Lauren Adler /Irene Adler, among others). I also appreciated that it reminded me of the mini-series "Desperate romantics".
I didn't give it 5 stars, though. I couldn't read it in one sitting and I don't know if that's what made it difficult for me, in some parts, to remember who was who and where ! There was also the revelation at the end of how Birdie disappeared and I found it... a bit anticlimatic, with Lucy's convenient memory loss.
However, it's a haunting story that I enjoyed very much.

The first 400 pages of this book are ROUGH.

WHO IS SPEAKING! Why doesn’t any of this make sense, and why is this so hard to follow.

I would give it 2.5 just for the twist she throws in like 2 chapters. It could have been a great story but there was too much going on and way to slow of a start.

Wow. What a book. I love Kate Morton's writing, she always manages to surprise me. I love how many characters there are and how she manages to tie it all together in the end. The plot twists are always unexpected and sad. I wish there was one more chapter with Elodie at the very end because I think the book only hints at what the ending of the whole story will be, but you never actually get to see it happen, it's a bit of a cliffhanger, which I don't like. Other than that it's a great read.

I had to re-listen to a few parts because there are a ton of characters and details but the effort paid off. It’s amazing to finish a book feeling heartbroken but satisfied and this is another one that left me feeling the whole spectrum of emotions.

***the audio book was phenomenal and the narrator might be the best I’ve ever heard. I did some googling and it’s read by the actress Anna Bates from Downton Abby. I could start the book and know immediately which character was speaking just by her voice for that particular character. And like I said before there were a lot of characters!!
