I love Kate Morton’s ability to weave a good story. This had a lot of good elements, including a “ghost” and a fairy tale with a nice interweaving of stories and lives. I love how her stories allow the house to take on its own character. The setting is just as important as the human characters. There were a few ends that needed to be tied up for me, which is the reason for the 4 stars instead of my usual 5 for this author.
I love a good Kate Morton mystery, full of lies and time jumping and small fragments of the truth unfolding over the course of the entire novel. She always wraps it up nicely.
It hints a good story underneath the convoluted narrative. The bare thin plot doesn’t so the story much favors and the introduction of various, borderline unnecessary characters to pad out the word count made this more tedious than fun.

But there is no way I can believe that Lucy would not tell where Lillie was which makes the story fall apart for me
i once again must ask kate morton: did we need 300 extra pages to get there?

I really enjoyed listening to this book but in the end was disappointed in the ending and lack of resolution for some of the story lines. I don’t need everything to be tied up neatly but I felt a lot was left unresolved.
