Desolation is the first book in R.L. Caulder’s Darkness Rising series. This book begins in the Fae realm, but then shifts to Earth. Of course, things don’t stay there, so get ready for a roller coaster of a ride in travel. The story begins with a Fae Queen losing her life, but she gets a second chance at life and with her mates, but a fight is waiting for them, and its coming fast. The time to prepare…is now at hand as they each come into their powers and accept that their relationships with each other, initially foster brothers and sister, is forever changing as their true fate as mates is revealed.
Desolation really captured my attention with the prologue and then the shift to “present” day with Lana and her foster brothers i.e. crushes since her teen years if not sooner. I love how the author has changed the Earth that we know. It’s being torn apart by devastating storms and I was eager to get some backstory on that, but…no dice. Too bad though because it’s a bit of a missed opportunity, but maybe the author will write a short story about it one day. I like how different each of the guys are. I like that they aren’t all the same in personality, though there are twins, but they are really fun. These characters have had rough childhoods before they were taken in by Beth, and it honestly warms my heart that while they came from tragic backgrounds that they have grown up in a warm household with someone who truly cares about them.
Two things I don’t like about this book: Lana’s mentality/personality however you want to take it. The girl is a brat. All of these characters, Lana and her mates are supposed to be around the same age. So why is that Lana acts like an immature teenager whose 15-16 years old? She hates loosing and acts like a brat when she does, suffers something truly tragic that impacts ALL of them, and she acts like a brat. I get that things are changing for Lana and the guys, but her insecurities and her attitude…it’s just all wrong. She acts like she’s entitled to her behavior and that it’s perfectly acceptable when it’s obviously not because when it get dished back to her she gets snitty. Lana honestly needs to be taken down several pegs, so when Serenity shows up and gives her ego a good thumping…I applaud. Seriously.
Now, I don’t mind sarcastic sassy characters, but I have little to no patience for characters with easily bruised egos and bratty personalities. The storyline really saves this book, plus some of the other characters as well. The guys help, but that’s only when they aren’t catering to her spoiled behavior and encouraging it. There are some really interesting scenes and situations in this book which kept me engaged so I am choosing to rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I honestly hope that Lana grows up…and I mean matures. She’s too much of a brat for my tastes and she acts like she’s owed things because life has been hard for her. This book isn’t for everyone due to some of the content, but overall it’s a decent read.

Loved it

The main thing I always look for in books is how well the author develops the characters. She does an excellent job at giving each of them their own personality. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series even though it is a very slow burn so far.

First I need me 5 mates like Lana has because they are absolute fire. Lana is an amazing heroine who has been through some terrible traumatic things in her life but honestly that doesn’t dull her shine. She is on a mission of self discovery and finding that she is worthy of all the good in her life including these amazing men that just want to worship her. She has these fantastic moments where she is serious sincere passionate and fierce and then she has these freaking hilarious outbursts that had me seriously busting out laughing. Her 5 guys are each completely swoon worthy, sexy and hot AF. Hale dominant and sexy, Ash completely devoted, Zedd (awe sweet sweet man), Leo and Luke the comedians are everything you could ever want. These five men are so in love with Lana the would go to the ends of the earth to protect her..... and they may just have to. There is darkness that lurks and Lana and her mates are in for one heck of a ride and man that cliffhanger left me with a book hangover. I can’t wait to get started with book 2!

sometimes main characters are funny, and sometimes they just try *really really* hard to be and this was just too much of that

I’m ashamed that it took me this long to read Desolation, cause boy have I been missing out!

Lana is such a great character, sassy and whip smart. The growth of her character is *chefs kiss*. I also love the dynamic between her and the guys. & the villain threw me for a loop.

I’m so pissed at myself for not reading this sooner. Can’t wait for Detonation!

ONE OF THE BEST books I have ever read!!! R.L. Caulder wrote a phenomenal book, storyline, and characters that I was completely consumed by. This book was a perfect blend of humor, action, angst, lust, love, darkness and so much more!

The unique identity and personality that each character brought to the story was wonderful. Each brought a uniqueness and realness to the story, with each contributing to the storyline and creating a more dimensional story that I completely lost myself in.

But Lana, I could feel everything this woman felt. Her pain, her love, her anger, her determination. She is one kick butt woman and I was in awe of her strength and resilience, of her loyalty and love. Together with her mates, she is unstoppable. She thrives with them by her side.

This story was so unique, raw and brilliantly original. It took me on a wild ride of emotions, like I was living through this story with each character, like I was a part of their family. This book was so extremely well written that the words just flowed off the pages, creating a magical world to escape to. I devoured this book from beginning to end, I never wanted to finish but I also needed to know what happens next. I truly cannot wait for book 2. I need more of this story and these characters like my next breath.

R.L. Caulder created a phenomenal story that is not be missed!! A huge 5 stars! If I could give it more I absolutely would. I can’t recommend this book enough!
