Freckle Juice

Judy Blume

3.62 AVERAGE

Andrew really wants freckles so a girl gives him a recipe. He makes it up and it is super gross, but he gets no freckles, figures out it is fake and draws blue freckles on him. Teacher helps him remove by giving him a secret freckle remover.

Cute little read aloud about a second grader looking to fit in. Looking forward to reading it with the grandkids!

Cute story for kids, despite being published in 1971. I think kids today will still enjoy it. It highlights that everyone is different and unique and that you shouldn't try to be someone else.

This book made me uncomfortable as a child and it still does. So a poor gullible child obsessively wants something that is both unattainable and worthless (freckles); an unscrupulous classmate notices this and takes advantage of it; when the promise proves fraudulent, the gullible child tries to salvage his pride by pretending it worked, and publicly humiliates himself in the process. Great.

Boring but simple and a quick read.

I thought about re reading this classic children's book. Still funny to the end.

I read this in preparation for my school’s Battle of the Books contest. This is one of the titles this year. I had read some Judy Blume growing up but never this one. It was super cute and a quick read.

Can't pull anything over on my kiddo. As soon as we read what the freckle juice recipe was, he said, "That's a scam!"
