This was a great time. HIGHLY recommend the audiobook - Jacob Morgan does it again 🤤. Couldn’t give it a 4 or 5 āļø rating only because the moments of tension or potential conflict got resolved too easily.

I fear I was… influencedā„¢ļø
Listen, I had fun. I giggled, I swooned, I cringed, I grimaced.
At the risk of overexposing myself here… for the past year or so, I have been on an incredibly difficult and admittedly distressing journey of self-discovery and sexuality. Without going into detail, I will say this; listening to this audiobook has completely shifted my personal view on and opinion of sex. Especially how BDSM can be so therapeutic for some if done completely safely, sanely and consensually.
Are the characters in the book and their actions regardless of their intentions flawed? Absolutely. Is every ā€˜sexual’ scenario in this book a perfect example of BDSM culture? Absolutely not. However,
despite being a (predominantly) submissive, Aly was ALWAYS the one who held the power, and Josh honoured that incredibly well, I believe.

Typically I am not a fan of a dual POV as I possess the attention span of a tiny squirrel, though it was quite refreshing listening to Josh
question his dark thoughts, intentions and morals, and potential commonalities shared with his serial killer father. He was always concerned for the safety of Aly, and never wanted to put her through genuine danger or pain. This allowed Aly to completely let go and trust Josh, and the empowerment that she expressed came with that was beyond eye opening and honestly struck a chord with me.
This book has made me want to explore sex and relationships again, and has truly shone a light on desires I never thought I wanted or really allowed myself to express. It has made me realise I have always centred men in my sexual experiences and not been able to properly let myself go due to shame, fear and trauma.
I know this is a silly little Tik-Tok dark romance, but reading so many positive reviews in favour of steering abundantly clear of the usual ā€œabuse disguised as kinkā€ storyline and not indulging in a male-gaze narrative, convinced me to take a chance for my next palate cleanser whilst reading a non-fiction as I usually like to do. While I don’t see myself making a habit of reading/listening to dark romance books any time soon, I’m glad I swallowed my pride and listened to this one.

So, I’ll admit, I am not the target audience for this book. I stick to sweet little romcoms with mild spice at best, so when TikTok influenced me to pick this one up, no one was more surprised than me. But how could I not with all the humorous clips and Jacob Morgan’s voice?!

I loved it. LOVED it. The humor had me laughing so hard I couldn’t breathe. Josh’s inner monologue has got to be one of the best I’ve read. And him + Fred was the love story I didn’t know I needed. Beyond that, he is a complex character with a deeply troubled past and while I wish we would have touched on his feelings about that more, I think it shone through in his devotion to Aly. I know it’s a dual PoV, but for me, Josh is definitely the main character.

Yeah, the spice was far out of my comfort zone, but I can see why the dark romance girlies would like it. And why would I hold that against the author when I knew going in I probably wouldn’t vibe?

Anyway, the chemistry between Aly and Josh is superb. The love, devotion, and care Josh exhibits is quite literally everything we want in a man, so boys, take notes! (But, like, definitely don’t chase me through the woods with a knife. Lol)

I’m going to be on a book hangover from this one for awhile.
