One of those stories I appreciated more than I enjoyed, with a powerfully resonant ending. An atheist's take on what the power of religion could be in other hands

Thus book was absolutely.... Wild. It went so many different places with so many different things and it all compiled into a happy ending?
I picked up this book because of the cover quote "A unique and deadly beast if a novel with a double toe of very sharp teeth" and obviously the title.... And I can't say that either of them are wrong, but the way in interpreted their meanings was not how this book laid them out.
I do absolutely love that alllllll the pieces came together and everyone's story ended up coming together. It was well done. I think I just can't get over how.... Different this book was. It was a nice palette cleanser though and I am glad I picked it up.

“Brett’s eyes found Malik’s—they were wide and wonder-filled, the same way English settlers might have gazed upon a virgin forest. Malik was only too eager to be claimed.”
“[He] ambled out of the room to leave Malik alone with his thoughts, abandoning him the way napalm-scented civilians would single-file march from their burning homelands.”
Is there a petition I can sign to make sure a white man never writes about opressed groups again? Because, hey, what is that?!? I could spend this whole review dissecting how atrocious those two quotes are but I won’t.
I’ve never seen someone quite so attached to the words “as if” before I read this book. There were even points where it was used more than once in the same sentence.
My annotations very quickly (within the first few pages) turned into editor’s notes because really this read more like a first draft than a completed, published work. No character felt distinct with any clear motive. Why was Ghost (awful name) willing to go so far for Gemma, even calling her a “loved one” after meeting her for 2 minutes in a waiting room?? How did Malik go from so passive (willing to never hold his husband’s hand in public again) to so aggressive (tracking down a man with the intention of torture and murder)? How am I supposed to care about the relationships of Ghost and Gemma or Brett and Malik when:
1. None of them are fully developed
2. They have zero chemistry
Another thing (of many) that didn’t make sense to me: You’re writing with both godly and queer themes, and yet, when your queer characters face homophobia, the homophobes aren’t following a Godly agenda? Instead they have some sob story that is supposedly there to make us feel BAD for him???? That felt like a huge missed opportunity. Then when we finally are introduced to this Godly figure that we saw create an absolute massacre in the opening…. it’s so incredibly underwhelming.
I had so many issues with this (the only reason I finished it is because I already bought the damn thing and didn’t want to waste my money) but I’ll leave it at that.
