"Compared with what we ought to be, we are only half awake. We are making use of only a small part of our physical and mental resources. Stating the thing broadly, the human individual thus lives far within his limits. He possesses powers of various sorts which he habitually fails to use."

Thes principles of this book have become common knowledge by now, which shows how influential this book has been! Still, a good reminder from time to time on how to be a better fellow human.

4.67 Stars. It's funny how such obvious things can be forgotten in the everyday. This was written in the 1920s and still holds up. Timeless. I've heard great things about this book (a few people told me it was their favorite book of all time) and now I see why.

Great ideas and teachings that need to be reminded and returned to from time to time. This definitely not a book you only read once. Real glad I got around to it.

More than just a business book. I mean, sure you do learn some business strategies, there is so might more to take away from this. Here is what I learned

I read the first half of this book last year, right before I went on my gap year trip across Europe. During my trip, I just kept the simple ideas, I had read about, in mind whenever I was interacting with people... I never had a social issue... In fact, I even met a person on a train, and with these ideas in mind, I interacted with them. I ended up staying at their house, interacting with this person (and their family) like we had been friends for years.

All just by keeping these ideas in mind; people want to feel special, important; people want to be treated kindly; people don't want to be lied to, "Always tell the truth", people will be more willing to engage with you if you show interest in what they have to say.

These are very simple ideas and they seem obvious, but if they are, why don't most people's apply them? For me, I thought I already was applying them before, however when I read the book, I saw examples of how these ideas were applied EFFECTIVELY, which made a big difference for me.

I strongly recommend this book :)

I expected to find a lot of outdated "fluff" but was surprised to instead find a trove of timeless advice. I've seen this book referred to as a guide for scoundrels, and while I will admit the information could be used in a negative or self-serving way, overall I think this is simply a guide for how to be a good communicator. Anyone who has to regularly interact with other people (read: nearly everyone) would benefit from reading this. It was eye opening to see how many communication "mistakes" I was making on a daily basis and I have already seen improvements in my life by putting these concepts to use.

Thought this book would unlock the secrets to world domination, but it turns out it's mostly about smiling and remembering birthdays.

Now to win some friends and influence them.
