“People tell stories, and it's up to those who listen whether to believe them or not. It's not the job of the storyteller.”
This story is about Lou, who is self-centered and a 24/7 busy man and always needs to be at 2 places at the same time. He is not happy with his life and always wants more, but actually he forgets what he already has- family.
Life goes on, until one day, before Christmas, he meets Gabe, a homeless man. who teaches him the value of time.
This book is about any everyday person living in a modern world where careers are so very important that they forget everything.
“Time can't be given. But it can be shared.”

The first chapter of The Gift is one of the best first chapters I've ever read. It sets you up for a festive read unlike many others. I have returned to this book every year since its publication in 2009 and every year I am still amazed and in awe of Ahern's story.
This story is perfect in every way, I love the way it fully immerses you into Lou's life. The lesson he, and you, learn at the end is so heartbreaking and yet so timeless.

I love Cecelia Ahern, I really do and I really wanted to like this book. I just didn't, it was so "Wonderful Life-ish" and predictable and I just didn't enjoy reading it.
I didn't like it very much. It feels like Gabe killed Lou, he made him go away and drive like crazy, he made him think his family was in danger or something. So that's the part it doesn't make sense to me.
This book really touched me. It was yet another interesting storyline from Ahern that in ways was really clever.
This was the first novel by Ahern that I had read. She has an easy enough style & I found this book to be an enjoyable step away from the usual chick-lit storyline of sassy-girl-living-in-the-city-looking-for-love!
The story revolves around main characters Lou & Gabe. Lou, the protagonist, is a big shot corporate man, working his life away & missing out on the amazing adventure that is marriage & family! Gabe is a homeless man that befriends Lou & enters his life in a series of both unexplainable & sometimes patronising situations that lead to Lou making discoveries about himself & his misdirected longings.
I enjoyed this story & the way it reached out from the pages & clutched at my heart in a way not many books can. Do we treat our time with respect or do we waste the gift of time on something not worthy of its importance?
Would I buy the book to read again, probably not, but I would recommend it?

this is my favorite book written by Cecelia Ahern. She has a way of writing very abstract things in a very simple way. loved this one..!
Quite a holiday read but an enjoyable read at that. Very easy going. There wasn’t much subtlety or nuance and it felt like the moral of the story was being thrust down your throat. Some things don’t add up, like how Lou made it home at the end having taken the pill when he was severely injured. Lou is an insufferable character and Gabe is just strange.
