Was really looking forward to reading these Wallander Mysteries after watching the tv show but it just felt underwhelming. Just felt like I was reading a really old script for a boring episode of Law & Order. I'll give the 2nd book a go but if it's anything like this one I may pass on it after 50 pages.

Got too distracted during the listening that I don't think any ratings I give would be fair.
A LOT of red herrings in the middle, with a relatively coincidental break through. Still, interesting lead and great atmosphere. Will contemplate to read book 2

I have never read any of the Wallander books, and I was in need of a bit of a "palate cleanser" and this very short book fit the bill perfectly.

It is a most excellent introduction to Kurt Wallander... a very troubled police officer. He has problems galore in his personal life, but boy is he good and piecing together a mystery!

This won't be my last Wallander book!

Not sure how I feel about this one. It's a page turner, that's for sure. It's partly the translation - Swedish is quite a sparse language when compared to English, and dialogue in particular can feel a little strange. But the mystery was a decent one, and poor old Wallander is an epicly rubbish hero, putting the pieces together while his life falls apart. There's plenty of the usual cop/mystery cliches here, and if you've read the Stieg Larsson trilogy (which Mankell predates) the themes are familiar. But it's also a little tongue in cheek. I loved Wallander's thought about fictional detectives always being divorced, for example. His sexism is hilariously awful.

So yup. Got through it very fast, was absolutely entertained. But not a game changer, by any means.
