Pretty good although some questionable views on london policing (i.e blaming rising knife crime on reduced police funding), a few too many coincidences that went unexplained and I dislike the main character the more I read the books

OK, so this is a pretty fun, light series by Anthony Horowitz.

As I've said before, I absolutely loved The Magpie Murders. It's one of my favourite books.
Does this series match that brilliance? No, not really. But it's fun enough, and the two mysteries so far have been enjoyable to try to figure out.
After I had read the first one, I wasn't sure if I would continue, because I didn't find Hawthorne to be that interesting a character. But I do like this guy's writing so despite that I eventually did decide to read this one after all.
Now, I'm feeling pretty much the same way. I'm not any more intrigued by the Hawthorne character than I was after book one.

I may return to the series again, but I'll see how the reviews for it pan out. He is a fine writer and a good constructor of mystery, that's for sure.

a 4.5/5 to be fair!

but where can i start with this magical writing and masterful plot! Horowitz seriously stretches the genre into a whole other dimension and nails it.

same as the first, Horowitz is the writer, and screen producer as he actually is, and following up with the "accidental side-kick" that happened in the first book, and decided to continue because of the 3-book deal that he signed.

before the first one was published, Hawthorne soon crashes his movie site to tell him about a murder that just happened

a divorce lawyer was killed with a wine bottle that is worth 2k, and surprisingly a few days before, his client's ex-wife poured a glass of wine on him and threatened that she would pour a whole bottle if available! but then there are numbers written in paint on the wall next to the victim, which doesn't make sense, until.... a poem with the same number appears in a book written by a writer who knows the lawyer.
The plot thickens further, we suspect his partner, the writer, the husband, their old friends, and something that has to do with a 10-year-old accident that happened to 3 friends...

I will leave the rest for you to unravel,
and as always, I don't think I will get tired of saying how much I enjoy reading this series!
very fast read, and despite the investigative murder mystery genre, it feels light, and with the banter and the bluntness of the characters, I just keep chuckling throughout!

the book as always, lays the clues for you, and then Horowitz actually finds a plausible conclusion, and he tells the detective on the case, and they arrest the suspect accordingly.... but was he right!? did he finally reach the right conclusion with the approval of Horowitz, or is there something that they are hiding?

what i think added no value whatsoever to the book was the lats few pages of the confession ( no spoilers, but you would know what i mean), i felt that we were already told about the whole story with exact details figured out in different parts, it could have been better if he just ended that " 6 months later, the wife gets a confession letter detailing what she was told by the police/Hawthorne, only adding to her belief that they weren't wrong" boom!

PICK UP THE SERIES/BOOK!! worth it!
