Since how could I speak without
the word lying for me? how could I speak except timidly like this: life just is for me. Life just is for me, and I don't understand what I'm saying. And so I adore it.

3.75⭐️ Very much brought me back to AP English. If you’re looking for a plot-driven book, this is not it. It’s very introspective and esoteric and can get quite confusing. I enjoyed the discussion of complex feelings and internal experiences and the struggle of trying to explain them. I was very interested in the more subtle struggle with gender throughout the book as well. I’m not sure if it was more of a queer struggle or an existential crisis after experiencing a trauma and the depersonalization that followed. Either way it was interesting, and I’m always down for queer subtext.
Also bugs are gross, but thankfully trying to understand what I was reading was a sufficient distraction from the creepy crawly.

Graphic: Animal death
Episodic and kaleidoscopic but not fragmented.... you can challenge yourself to "figure it out" or just enter the fugue state with the narrator, becoming intermittently lucid when a cast-off line with corrupted grammar resonates with you.
"Forgiveness is an attribute of living matter"
"I'm going to say to you what I never said before, maybe that's what's missing: having said. If I didn't say it, it wasn't out of greed in telling, or because of my muteness of a roach that has more eyes than mouth. If I didn't say it it's because I didn't know that I knew -- but I know now. I'm going to say to you that I love you."
"The least dangerous thing, in meditation, is 'seeing', which dispenses with thinking words. I know that an electronic microscope now exists that shows the image of an object one hundred and sixty thousand times larger than its natural size -- but I wouldn't call the vision one has through the microscope hallucinatory, even if one no longer recognizes the small object that is monstrously enlarged."

95% of this novel takes place in a tiny room inside of this (assumably) rich woman’s house, but it doesn’t feel like it. it doesn’t feel like the narrator has been sat in this room in the same position staring at the same exact thing for hours. clarice takes you on a journey of a lifetime in this one. and i definitely had an inkling as to what the “genuinely shocking scene” that the synopsis referred to was, but i still was NOT prepared for it when it happened. i was cringing through the whole scene omfg. anyways, TW insects because she goes into DETAIL about this damn cockroach.
