ok so i relate to this book heavy as it so accurately depicts what having an existential crisis feels like, the constantly self-contradicting circular logic that feel like its about to spill into some grand revelation and never does, everything-is-nothing-ass philosophical ponderings i've so been here. the problem is that that was an annoying thing to live and as it turns out its also an annoying thing to read. there's things i like about it like the slow-burn setup/payoff of the premise, there's some good lines in here as well, and it really is quite a feat to capture such a specific headspace for a whole novella just the meat of it isn't that enjoyable. it also reads super fast for a book that has probably the least amount of anything happening ever.

Surprisingly good once you get past the long-winded start. It helps that Clarice Lispector was really hot. Reminds me a lot of pre-Cthulhu mythos Lovecraft.

The Passion According to G.H. definitely feels like it is in the same vein as Agua Viva, but it hits quite differently. The Passion convinced me that Lispector really is on another level when it comes to seeing and understanding the world and existence.

While many of her philosophical musings went over my head, they were still fascinating to sit with. I didn’t like this as much as Hour of the Star, but it’s a close second. When reading The Passion, you get the sense that even if Lispector didn’t fully know what she was talking about, it’s clear she had at least convinced herself that she did.

Honestly, it’s pretty darn impressive how much philosophy she managed to eke out of an encounter with a cockroach.
