Peril at End House

“You have a tendency, Hastings, to prefer the least likely. That, no doubt, is from reading too many detective stories.”

Our favourite moustachioed Belgian is back on the scene and in full detection mode. At his side, the bumbling Hastings. This is another excellent mystery from the queen of the genre, combining a rather nasty evil plot with lighter and funny touches, usually in the form of Poirot being his usual obnoxious self to the detriment of Hastings.

"Poirot," I said. "I have been thinking."
"An admirable exercise my friend. Continue it.”

Definitely one of the better Poirot novels.

All the clues are there, all the characters are suspicious, and even when I had my sights set on a particular someone the motive completely eluded me! The plot was so engaging and fun (i.e. the multiple attempts at murder, conflicting character accounts, and Poirot's utter frustration at not being able to figure things out). Definitely one of my favorite of the whole collection!

This twist may be one of my favorites, especially since I guessed the one in The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. I was convinced I'd figured out the mystery, and then it turned out that what I'd figured out was just a tiny piece of the puzzle — Christie fooled me again, though as usual the clues were all there. Hastings isn't nearly as obnoxious and bumbling as he is in some other books. The only thing that bothered me was
the complete lack of resolution regarding the Crofts — Japp recognizes Mrs. Croft as a known criminal, and then Frederica's husband shows up and we don't hear anything else about the Crofts except later that they're led off by a police officer. Who was Mr. Croft? They said his fingerprints didn't match a known criminal, so was he a brand-new accomplice? Was he actually Australian? How much did he really know about what was going on? I had so many questions about the Crofts that were never answered.

I hadn't heard of this before as one of the classic Hercule Poirot mysteries (doesn't the title sound kind of like a Goosebumps book?) but I think it's worth a read!
