high points:
- shoutout to my favorite idiot ! hastings is here !
- entertainment value stays high throughout on account of hasting’s presence and the volume of drama
- there’s a red herring here that i found quite clever
low points:
- the ending was unsatisfying to me; it felt cartoonish
- i felt there was a question or two left unanswered (who the fuck posted that box of chocolates ? and for what gain ??)
- as might be gathered from the previous two points, compared to the other books ive read by agatha christie, this one generally felt sloppy
now for a fun hastings/poirot quote to soothe my disappointment over that ending:

"do you know, poirot," [hastings] said, "i call that rather a bright idea. there may be something in it."
poirot groaned.
"you would say that! it would appeal, i knew, to your romantic but slightly mediocre mind."

Not a bad little Hercule Poirot, fooled me, anyway.
2023 update:
Enjoyed the Hugh Fraser audiobook, and I almost didn't remember who did it. (eventually I did recall, but bless my dead brain cells for keeping me guessing for awhile)

“I am convinced that le bon Dieu created Hercule Poirot for the express purpose of interfering. It is my métier.”
Really solid! I'll never get tired of Christie's plots, because they're always just unique enough and clever enough to completely absorb me. I love a mystery where the reader can play along closely, and still not figure it all out completely. There were a few really standout side characters in this one that I became super fascinated with, and who were great vehicles to tell the story. I don't know if this is just my impression, but I felt like we got a lot of Poirot's personality in this too, and not just in bombastic displays. It's always great to see him preen and boast, but we see other sides to him as well. And for the first time in forever, Hastings felt like a good and well-rounded narrator; not at all as annoying as I've found him in the last several books. And the mystery itself was really good. Multi-pronged, as all of Christie's mysteries are. And it was interesting to see Poirot having to prevent a crime, rather than solve one. I didn't quite figure it out, and it was really satisfying in the end, if not as wowing as some of her other books.
Listened to the audiobook as read by High Fraser; a good time as always.

Solider Poirot aber Spaß zum Lesen macht aber andere fand ich eingängiger aber trotzdem ein gutes, spannendes Buch.
This is definitely one of Christie's best mysteries. Full of twists, suspense, intriguing characters, and just the right amount of humor sprinkled throughout, Peril at End House is the perfect mystery to take along on a trip to the beach.

I needed a quick page-turner after the density of Milkman and Christie never disappoints. However, I again called the outcome very early in the plot. It is always fun to watch the pieces fall together though.
