3.5 stars. Think I'm rating it lower just because of what I've been reading recently. This book was engaging, entertaining, and sweet. Definitely helps that I've got a soft spot for quirky kids.
3.5 stars. It took me a while to get into this book. Frank's personality was a put off and I first found him annoying before I found him endearing and loveable. Mimi just pissed me off entirely and I didn't really like her. I don't know how Alice even got through this book tbh but she did a damn good job with her situation.
I completely fell in love with Frank, though I have to admit I think I would prefer to visit him and not live with him. What a great character! The others were unique, too--one I liked at the beginning, then didn't, then empathized with; another I didn't like at the beginning and didn't really like at the end, but managed to find a level of tolerance I could live with. Does that make the book sound unpalatable? It shouldn't. They all make up a nice story I thoroughly enjoyed.
Alice is sent to LA to help a famous author, Mimi Banning, write the book promised to Alice's employer, Mr. Vargas. Mimi's son, Frank, takes up most of Alice's time. Frank is the star of the story, quirky, super smart and unable to exist in school and the milieu of regular kids. Dressed in suits and a top hat, Frank is a character to be appreciated. With humor and heart, Be Frank With Me is a pleasure to read. Recommended.
Julia Claiborne Johnson paints an eccentric drama that, while I had a handful of issues with, is definitely worth the read. As do the characters in her novel, I fell in love with Frank and I think it's the genuine-ness of her writing that makes it so easy to keep reading.
I loved this book! It was heartwarming, quirky, sweet and funny.
This was very good. Frank is an original, interesting and amusing character and the author uses Alice to describe him well. The Alice and Frank relationship is just wonderful. There was a sub-plot that seemed superfluous and I got a little bored during that sub-plot, but otherwise really enjoyed this book.
This book was written for me. The quirky, funny, lovable Frank is the type of character I want to read about over and over. Don't be fooled by the quick read; layers of life lessons are packed into this little goodie. Once you start, you'll race to the end while at the same time trying to slow yourself down to savor every bit.
Loved it. The writing style was engaging, and Frank is one of the most endearing characters I have encountered in a long time.
Who doesn't love a book whose main character is 9-year-old who won't leave home without his spats and monocle? Frank is fantastic...adorable, brilliant, funny, weird and wonderful. When his reclusive Harper Lee-like mother locks herself in her office to write her second book in an effort to keep herself and Frank afloat, narrator Alice steps in to steer the listing ship. It's a rollicking, fun read with lots of depth and soul. Highly recommend.
