Not up to her normal standards. Time delay gimmick did not work for me.

Tracy Chevalier is still amazing

I really enjoyed The Glassmaker! Tracy Chevalier is just a good writer and one of my all time favorite go-tos for historical fiction.

I listened to this for a book club pick.  I liked it, but didn't love it.  The history is fascinating.  It made me want to buy glass beads.  I'm not sure what the time travel element added to the story.  Perhaps, Chevalier wanted to write a history of Venice and she partially succeeds.  I was distracted though by the time jumps and wondered how it worked.  Why did some people die and others not? I felt it got a little preachy on topics of today too, in an obvious way.  It held my attention and was worth the time.

“People who make things also have an ambiguous relationship with time. Painters, writers, woodcarvers, knitters, weavers and, yes, glassmakers: creators often enter an absorbed state that psychologists call flow, in which hours pass without their noticing. Readers, too.”

In this novel we explore both the history of Venice and the history of glassmaking on Murano in a unique way with the story of the Rosso family and Orsola in particular being told in a linear fashion but jumping the time forward so whilst the story ages with Orsola, the Venetian surroundings may jump forward centuries but with the same characters acting out their story.

A clever conceit to illustrate the timeless nature of glassmaking and how little the tradition has evolved over time, along with that glorious timelessness that Venice evokes.

I really loved this, and it definitely made me want to go back to Venice and to explore Murano.

Honestly I just couldn't suspend my belief enough for this book, could have been really great even with just a little more explanation. Also the love story is annoying
