I tried to start this twice - in October and again this January. I couldn't get going either tie, so this is a 'did not finish'. They need a drop down status for that, so I don't have to pick 'read'.

Jared is a truly enjoyable character, who seems to have it more together than anyone else around him. I really enjoyed both the humour and the writing in this book.
I loved the first 2/3rds of the book so much ! I just felt like the supernatural parts seemed disjointed from the rest of the book and didn't pull me in like I was hoping.

Great characters; reading Jared was almost like going in a time machine. The pace is good. The writing highly accessible. My only beef was the sheer sum of magical people, given that's it's based in our world (I lived in the town where this was set: drinking, drugs, violent transient work crews, yes; magic, nuh-uh). Probably give Monkey Beach a go rather than continuing the series.
I just loved this. Robinson captures all of the larger than life feelings of living so perfectly, showcasing the magnification of life as experienced by teenagers.
The story is simple, populated by complex characters displaying all the ugly and wonderful varieties available. The magical element seeps in and imbues the story without taking it over. It remains centered on the effortful coming of age experienced by Jared as he tries to keep his family and his own sanity intact.

The life of a young man trying to navigate teen years, family, school, drug culture, and whether it not he's a Trickster. I liked Jared and his wishing of a good life.
