Pointless and depressing.

Weird weird plotting... the plot didn’t start until p.245 really, over 3/4 of the book. The beginning was all establishing what a shitty life Jared had, what a “dealer with a heart of gold” he was. The characters were really intriguing, but they weren’t consistent- the mom would flip from lovey to crazy ( but at least she was mentally ill (I think?) so there was more logic, I’m thinking about Dylan or ebony, the side characters).

Very much first book in a planned trilogy energy, by which I mean the ending came out of no where, there was no real climax, and the end just set up the next book. Three stars is generous to me, the only reason it’s getting such a high number is because dad loves it so much.

David was a great character, scary as shit. As was crashpad, the jaks family, and Sarah. And Jared was a great character as well, despite the cliche. But characters just aren’t enough to make a great book.

It was better when I read it in short doses (a chapter or two here or there). Plowing through it really emphasized how nothing was going on, how little sense the world had, and how repetitive the book came to be.

"Humans come with an instruction manual, some twenty-four thousand genes, which, given the innumerable ways we malfunction, would appear to have been written by a dyslexic drunk on a bender. We're biological machines with consciousness, builders of empires, creators and destroyers of worlds, singers of sagas and dirges, able to envision the pearly gates of heaven and the firey depths of hell, able to bounce around the moon, but unable to walk a couple of steps to put our water bottle in the recycling bin."

Truly the best book I’ve read in a while. Amazing. Would recommend to anyone.

A gritty and realistic urban fantasy featuring native Canadian folklore and a manic pixie dream girl. I'll definitely be finishing this trilogy.

A heartbreakingly beautiful mix of brutal realities of violence and addiction as well as humour and resilience. Indigenous magic and self discovery are woven in to create tense action and page-turning intrigue!

I don't usually review, but this book really resonated with me. It doesn't shy away from reality, covers some topics that to some readers are "too dark" but to a lot of people from small Canadian towns with few jobs, bad drugs/alcoholism, and discrimination - that's just life. Fantasy novels tend towards escapism, but I thought this novel brought something different to the table. Can't wait to pick up the sequel.
