3.5 stars - cute book but a bit formulaic for my taste. Good for a quick, light read but nothing earth shattering.
Wanted to stop at 5%. Made it through to 71%. Should've listened to past me.
The top 1 star comment is a perfect summary of everything wrong with this book. Most egregious is the awful, cringey, millennial pop-culture heavy writing.

I liked the book. I think the stuff with her family was a much stronger part of the book than the stuff with Tom. I liked Tom well enough, but it felt like there was not enough time in the book to give him character development and let the relationship develop so it ended up feeling like a shallow view of their relationship and a flat character. The family on the other hand was interesting and seeing all of the different relationships the different members had with Nina's Dad was enjoyable.
1.75 stars Initially Cute and dorky but then very flimsy, and by the end, boring. Initially I liked the family story (at 29 Nina discovers she has several siblings and nieces/nephews after spending her entire life as a singleton with absentee mother). I wanted to see how that integration was going to go...
Sadly it diverted into a “love story” around 50% and fell off with both character development (only for the characters to later not react/behave/act in accordance with the crumbs of personality the reader received initially) and plot development

"Do you know the best feeling in the world? It's reading a book, loving every second of it, then turning to the front and discovering that the writer wrote fourteen zillion others."
I absolutely looooved Nina Hill, loved her wit, her love of comfort, and of course her affinity for books. I so enjoyed my time within Nina's world. Waxman created such a vivid, warm story that made me smile throughout. I've been in a bit of a book slump, having read lots of heaviness lately and this was the perfect break. It reminded me why I love reading. Nina interestingly reminded me a lot of my husband. She enjoys her alone time, is immersed in her work, and is a trivia guru. I laughed aloud a lot because I saw such similarities between Nina and myself, too.
There were so many quotes that I resonated with, especially the ones about how books can heal and help you discover different parts of yourself. It made me want to hug my local bookstore staff and BUY ALL THE BOOKS. Waxman talks about living in LA with such humor it made me want to visit. I'll be thinking of this one for a long time and recommend it if you're in need of a feel good, witty (but not too cutesy) book with an amazing set of characters. I wish this were a series cause I want more!

I enjoyed everything about this book (the writing, the characters, the story), except one huge disappointment -- the male love interest. I personally find it offensive that this smart, thoughtful, interesting main character gets stuck with a guy with whom she has nothing in common -- except physical attraction. (Which seemed to be the only thing on this guy's mind since he couldn't even engage in a short conversation for thinking of how she looked.) Ick. I couldn't get excited about the ending, because I was not convinced that these two people had any reason to be together. Still, I loved the writing, in general, so I'm going to try another Abbi Waxman book with hopeful anticipation!
