Maybe it was the writing style or maybe it was a bit fast paced but the story itself didn’t really “suck me in”. I am willing to continue reading the series though, because it has gotten so much praise online. I’m just not sure this series is my cup of tea.

listen… i wish i didn’t love this series as much as i do but! not for the faint of heart (can be triggering as hell) and some of the writing is…. not good but the characters really get you into the storyline

I'm rereading this triology and i am having the time of my life. The writting is very basic, but nora sakavik really does  know what we readers want to read, and that's why this book is soooo fast pace. I was having a reading slump, and this series was just what i needed. Now I’m actually excited to continue my TBR!!!!
Most of the characters are/were fucked up. I mean…👀

one day I'll stop rereading this book every single year. one day I'll stop obsessing over a fictional sport I barely understand and a bunch of kids who could probably kill me in 0.2 second. luckily for me, today isn't that day.

i think this is a solid 4 stars for me. while the plot is constantly all over the place (sports, mafia, drugs, violence, found family, gay guys???) and all the characters are messy as fuck, it is a captivating read all the same and i couldn't put it down until the very end. 
even if the plot themes might be controversial, something that can't be denied is how well-written the story is. the writing style is very similar to maggie stiefvater's in 'the raven cycle' books, so if you're a fan of those, i'd give this one a shot :)
i did enjoy the story itself. it is well structured and it evolves at a good pace, never too obvious but hinting at what's coming next. the characters are original and come in nicely together, as a group they're very well balanced and developed. the sport side of the story is a clever counterpoint to the other sub plots, and i personally really enjoy how it compliments all the drama that the characters inherently carry with them. it lets the story breathe while also keeping a steady pace. 
this is a very violent story though. maybe not that much in this first book, but it gets heavier as the plot progresses in the next ones. there's trauma, there's physical, sexual and emotional abuse, there's guns and knives and torture and self harm. if you're ok with these and are up for a dense, emotional tale, then you found the one.

God this had my insides in a knot the entire time. Im really out of my comfort zone here and in way over my head. Its so much and so dark but so good at the same time 




Update: so its aug 10th 2022 rn and I'm relistening to this series for the 4 times and have listened to each book a combined 11 times. So my star rating is no longer accurate but for the sake of recording my immediate honest reaction, Ill leave everything the same. Just know that I have never loved a series so much despite the numerous blatant issues in it.
