quick to read and at times made me laugh. but the way both bdsm and non-monogamy are treated in this book is so lazy, boring and quite frankly unforgivable. using non-consensual bdsm and unethical non-monogamy for shock value with zero self awareness is just... really? this is the best you can write? embarrasing.
Graphic: Emotional abuse, Toxic relationship
Moderate: Sexual assault
Started out pretty good and ended pretty good. Waaaaay too long and drug out in the middle. Took me forever to finish because I was so bored.

I got fleabagged (the last chapter is called it'll pass). There was not enough unproblematic life living and TOO MUCH TOXIC RELATIONSHIP WHO WOULD ENJOY READING THIS. This book made me so furious and upset and it was not at all advertised to be about this. I feel like the book itself wasn't recognising how horrible the relationship was, and I know it's from the victims perspective but it left me really confused. So much of it just horrified me and I hated every time they got back together. The humor was also very unfiltered and made me a bit uncomfortable at points. It framed non-monogamy really weirdly as well and didn't have any retrospective nuance about it. Also the protagonist comes out as a lesbian and doesn't make friends with a single queer person other than lesbians as far as I can tell.I need to learn not to hate read books and to just put them down.

This book made me sad :((
The main relationship was abusive and I don't like abusive :(( I picked up this book because it kept getting recommended, had good ratings and was described as funny - but I didn't know it'd be about a meanie person :(( the narrator/style kinda made me think of Bridget Jones - which already isn't my vibe so I didn't get the funny :((
It was also a bit more explicit than I was expecting but ig that's on me. Books about toxic relationships are not not my vibe - I be saddened.

I do hate saying this, as I don’t like spending my time writing negative things, but I did not enjoy this book at all. In At The Deep End tells the story of Julia, a young twenty something living in London who realises she’s a lesbian and embarks on a great gay sexual Odyssey. This was a book club pick and I really wanted to like it but unfortunately I just found so much of it to be unfunny, unsexy and utterly disconnected from reality that I couldn’t enjoy it. It’s unfortunate that I read this so shortly after Queenie which did ‘young woman living in London undergoes major upheaval, has a tonne of ill-advised sex, gets some therapy and then discovers her self-worth’ with lashings more warmth and humour and In The Dream House which handled topics of lesbian identity and abusive and controlling queer relationships with significantly more nuance and thought. Read those books instead.
