First off, thank you NetGalley and Flatiron Books for granting me access to this book in exchange for an honest review.
The synopsis for this book sounded fantastic and I was super excited to read it. I mean who doesn't love a suspenseful mystery thriller?!? Unfortunately, it was just okay for me! I wish I had known that this book was a sequel to the author's previous book "The Resemblance". It would have helped me tremendously with the background of the characters and the confusion. I am not sure why the marketing for this book does not state its a sequel.
In addition, the first half of the book was extremely slow for me! Honestly, I considered stopping at this point; however, I decided to keep reading and I am glad that I did. The second half did pick up the pace and I was eager to figure out the mystery. But I was not completely sold on the ending because it was a bit unbelievable for me.
Overall, I would strongly recommend reading The Resemblance before reading this book. Ultimately, I would have enjoyed the book more if I had read the first book.⭐️⭐️⭐️

The ending totally surprised me! I like the way she weaved in information that was relevant but you didn't see that it was. I loved the different characters perspectives and jumping back in forth in time! Marlitt is stubborn and annoying sometimes, but I still root for her to figure it out.

This was suspenseful, great imagery, and I love novels from multiple points of view and periods of time. However, this read like the author has some kind of vendetta against UGA. This story could have been set at literally any university in the world and it wouldn't have made a dollop of difference to the storyline. And other than the specific references to street names and areas of campus, the background of the scenery is really a university built on and still steeped in racism. It distracted from the plot vs enriching it, and whether or not those arguments are valid, by throwing them in as barbs at the university in the book make it read like she (the author, not the main character) has something against the school itself and cheapens what may be valid points. Otherwise, I mean, she lives in Nashville, why not set it at Vanderbilt?
Anyway, I didn't realize this was a sequel when I started it and I do plan to read the first book, but I needed to vent about that. It was just weird.
Also, the last chapter was confusing and I had to go back and reread some of it. It sounded at first like it was about something Graves had done, not about Spencer, so I thought I must have missed something. Great ending overall, but the way it was written was misleading and not in a plot twist kind of way.
