I like how raw this book feels. Written from the POV of boys who were captivated by the Lisbon's girls hermit life and the following mass suicides, the obsessiveness of the boys do teeters on the creep side, however their introspective reflections on the events add a human touch to a haunting tragedy. The prose is very atmospheric, and if I could only use one word to describe it, 'dense' would perfectly encapsulate the reading experience of this book.

Destroyed me in every possible way. A book that makes you feel the tragedy of its characters so deeply it’ll take your soul outside of your person and into theirs. No doubt one of the best books I’ve read in my entire life. Will never re read.

in short this book is voyeuristic and perverted. in long Jeffrey Eugenides encapsulates girlhood from the perspective of perverted teenagers who view the depressed Lisbon sisters as gods. The narrator of the text retrospectively looks back at their suicides as a life altering event despite not knowing the girls which creates an unreliable narration of their lives but despite this, the Lisbon sisters have become a relatable figure for girls experiencing the same issues they had in the text. Eugenides’ creates a dichotomy in the text of writing and world building so beautifully it brings up emotion then contrasting it with the narrators foul motives and subconscious written out to remind you that even when girls are going through emotional turmoil they are still sexualised and perceived as an item to be had.
