A modern classic about being trapped, being controlled, and feeling ashamed. The gradual decay of the house from well-kept to dreary and dull was haunting, especially knowing what had caused that change to occur. 

It is hard not to attribute blame to the parents for what happens at the end, although you cannot be too harsh on their actions too. It is a story where everyone is a victim, and empathy is ample. The fact that they became more controlling because of

the first daughter's suicide

, which lead the rest of the sisters to

follow suit due to the feeling of being oppressed and ashamed

, was a greater metaphor for the role of women/expectations of debutantes in modern society.

A tense and deeply saddening read, one that will not be easily forgotten. Although, I always found it a bit unbelievable that

they would all go through with suicide

, I could suspend my disbelief a bit to let the author illustrate his point.
