“Obviously doctor, you’ve never been a thirteen year old girl” 

GENIUS. Male gaze criticism. Lyrical. The Lisbon girls have this heartbreakingly parasocial relationship with everyone in their small town and it’s destroying to watch it all unfold. The investigative format is brilliant; exploring the framing of mental health of young girls within 70s middle class suburbia. 

And i love sofia coppola’s film adaptation of this

It was a beautiful story — I’ve never read anything like it. The moment I read the title I was intrigued. Learning about the girls and their lives was all so greatly written it was almost poetic. There were times that I’d get pulled into the storyline and get absolutely lost in words, but then there was some racist or misogynistic comment that would pull me right back. There were times where other characters would get vivid descriptions and the pace would halt for a few pages (which I wasn’t obsessed with). Other than that, the plot itself is great.

unsure whether the unreliability of the narrator is intentional. I read it as an exploration of the projections society puts on young women and how they crush us, but it could equally be read as a titillating perverted description of deeply disturbed young girls.
