unsure whether the unreliability of the narrator is intentional. I read it as an exploration of the projections society puts on young women and how they crush us, but it could equally be read as a titillating perverted description of deeply disturbed young girls.

I loved the writing. Absolutely adored it.

It is one of those books that carries itself completely in the writing, and the plot becomes an afterthought. The way the sentences flow endlessly with details of places and people, because the boys know everyone but the virgins. From the diabetic kid to the old neighborhood lady. These people grew up. The girls didn't.

I tend to avoid books with male protagonists, about men (and this book is about the boys). But I can't help loving the deconstruction of the male gaze.

How do you make suicide boring? By making it realistic. By making it anything but scandalous. By criticizing the way we scandalize suicide. And in all ways, desexualize it. Brilliant.

I'm probably gonna re-read this in the future.

This is a deeply emotional book that takes on the struggles of being a teenage girl, while told in the point of view of the disgusting male gaze. I’m still saddened that I did not get to see the girls POV in their own story, but The Virgin Suicides is a timeless classic and must read to those who manage well with upsetting themes.

Answering these questions about the main characters of The Virgin Suicides is complicated, because though the Lisbon sisters are the subject of the novel, they are not the main characters. Rather, the unnamed group of neighborhood boys who obsess over the sisters are our main character.

I love this book for its study of the oppressive male gaze, disillusionment with the American dream, and unreliable narrators. It's my absolute favorite book, Jeffrey Eugenides is a genius.
