cannot believe that this is what the coquette girls put themselves through. pretentious and boring and so male-centered which i know is the point but is also crazy

honestly loved the book. i dislike that it’s written by a male author but i think it sheds so much light onto how men perceive women, whether by intent or not. the third person narrative (from a boy/man) also further highlights this.

i think you need to have a certain level of empathy to really understand the book. a lot of really complex topics are narrated in detail and makes you think and reflect deeply. it is slow/medium pace so the build up to these (potentially triggering) descriptions is more digestible.

necessary read for anyone looking to further understand post modern feminism

First 3 star of the year for me! This book was quick pace and easy to read. Not saying this isn’t a good book but it definitely wasn’t for me with the amount of derogatory language and names I did not like. And it gave Christianity a bad name with the way it was used in this book. It was not so favorable in terms of real storytelling but of course that was because of it being from a third person view. I only really stayed to find out how each of the girls had died. By the 3/4 point of the book you know why the Lisbon sisters killed themselves. It was a sad story but was not the most interesting.

This book was average for me. The way that the boys were so obsessed with the Lisbon girls was a bit troubling, especially because the girls were clearly screaming out for help but they were so “in love” with them that they were oblivious to it. They say they were in love with the girls but so many times they say that they couldn’t even tell them apart.

It’s a very tragic story with very long chapters, making it harder to get through.
