The Lost Symbol

Supremely uninteresting. Brown doesn't even bother to hide the techniques he uses to build suspense. Very boring read indeed.
adventurous challenging dark informative mysterious reflective tense fast-paced

Not a bad follow up. I could have lived with less talk after the whole mystery was wrapped up. I also didn't like so many chapters dedicated to the point-of-view of the villain.

The first time I started the audiobook I got from my library, I discovered it was an abridged version and I had to start it over just to get used to it since I normally don't like abridged audiobooks. Although, in this case, halfway through or close to it actually, I kept wondering why in the world didn't my library have an abridged version of [b:Origin|32283133|Origin (Robert Langdon, #5)|Dan Brown|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1576370917l/32283133._SY75_.jpg|52935032] and yet, by the revealing of THE LOST SYMBOLS I was thinking, "That's it? That's the lost symbol of what exactly?" and then of course it had to be mixed with religion and science after that *eye roll* and this book was definitely Origin all over again or to some Origin was Lost Symbol all over again so I can totally see as to why many didn't like Origin.

I'm super glad now my county library had a copy of an abridged version of this book because I would've lost hope and DNF'd it and yet would keep going out of curiosity, although the scientific stuff at the end made me question at the ridiculousness of the story and made me laugh at how dumb it was. This whole book fell flat and it was also totally and major predictable as to who the villain was *eye roll and rubbing eyes in embarrassment/boredom) and yet ugh. Not the best writing. Though I do have to say looking back when I read [b:Inferno|17212231|Inferno (Robert Langdon, #4)|Dan Brown|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1534070896l/17212231._SY75_.jpg|23841765] I did enjoy it and it seemed to redeem after this one, but Origin was the same as this: both total flops.

But, I AM hoping I'll admit to see this book and Origin both become movies since I'd rather watch on the screen and since Ron Howard did an amazing job with the movies, I think I liked the films better without the details and so much description and visually they were exciting. Anyway, overall, this book sucked, Dan Brown again needs to retire Robert Langdon now that I can say I've read all of these and Origin however was definitely all his books rolled into one. So thank goodness for an abridged audiobook version of this book!!

This entire series has seemed a little bit silly to me, but most of that can be excused because the books are also fun. The one thing Dan Brown does amazingly well is ending every chapter on a cliff-hanger so you absolutely have to keep reading. The action in this one kept me entertained, and for the most part the pacing was acceptable. That being said, I don't think this is the strongest of the Robert Langdon books. The big issue I had with The Lost Symbol was the end felt like a cop-out. I'm planning on reading Inferno (because I have to finish a series once I start it), but I hope the end of the series is a little better than book 3.

I must say - once you've read one Dan Brown you know what's waiting for you.
The jumping between story lines, the cliffhangers at the end of every.single.chapter...yes, it makes it easy to read on, the story flows and you just want to *know* then.
But all in all I think I found all the explanations on symbolism and information in general more interesting than the thriller itself.

As always a fantastic book by Dan Brown! The concepts and the reveals in this book are impressive, some you can see coming but others flaw you! A heavy dose of suspension of disbelief is required as in all of Dan Brown's work but I absolutely loved this book and the discussions in it!

Brown should have been done w/ Langdon after the Davinci Code. I wrote a script for his book:

Langdon: My friend's hand on a stake, wtf? I'm a SYMBOLOGIST, by the way.
Mal'akh: That's right, Peter's hand on a stick, now follow the signs, d-bag!
Katherine: WAIT! you hydro-bombed by work!!! I can weigh a SOUL you m-effer.
Sato: Langdon, grab the pyramid it's time to go. We have national security to worry about!
(Langdon and Katherine grab sacred pyramid and take off)
Sato: NO YOU IDIOTS--NATIONAL SECURITY! Get back he----Oh EFF--CIA, get out there now--billion-dollar technologies only, these 2 are crafty.
(Langdon and Katherine, on the run)
Katherine: I can weigh the soul. I study mind and matter connections. Uh..ok that's it.
Langdon: This is crazy. Okay let's focus, I can certainly figure out this pyramid which I don't even THINK EXISTS but here goes....
(Mal'akh runs in to disable both Langdon and Katherine and takes them to secret basement / altar of sacrifce. He wheels in a completely shaved, one-handless Peter who looks near death but still has a bit of fight).
Mal'akh: Here's the plan you stupid idiots: I'm becoming a god, Robert's going to THINK he's dead, Katherine I'm going to bleed you to death...Peter--you're coming with me.
(CIA storms in, but Mal'akh's gone with Peter--luckily Robert is saved and so is Katherine. Thanks to Robert's eidetic memory, he knows EXACTLY where they're headed. A confrontation ensues, tears and blood are shed, but luckily the LOST SYMBOL is still safe.)
Peter to Langdon: I'm a mason, Langdon. We have a lot of secrets but the best one of all is the Bible.
Langdon: This is crazy. Now, I'm going to try and bang your sister Katherine, but call me the next time you need symbols figured out. I'm pretty good at it.

Great action filed mystery that made you want to read. Great plot and well written!
