This book started out so great and then it unfortunately fell flat for me. It almost becomes a totally different storyline that barely meshes together. I enjoyed all the fight scenes though

The first bit of this book reminded me a lot of another book I’m reading — A Kiss of Daggers by Christopher D Schmitz. Basically elves are the rulers humans are looked down on. A human mmc meets elf fmc and falls in love, and enters a deadly contest to be with her. Since these two books were pretty similar at first I didn’t like this one. There were some weird grammar errors in the first bit of this book that threw me out of the story, and honestly I just thought A Kiss of Daggers had a better story.
Around page 180, I started to really like this book. I loved the romance between Leith and Maeve, I love how they just both mutually respect each other and that is what the romance is based on. And I liked the gladiator games, the battles were written really well and very interesting.
I do have lots of questions that the book didn’t really address. Like Leith talks about how he has been fighting for awhile before the book starts but yet he hasn’t earned a single tattoo? Like did they have to qualify to make to the arena? But then how did he meet Sullivan? I am also really curious about the magic system like how does it work? If the wizard was dead how did the beast still move (like if this was a magic construct shouldn’t it have disappeared when the wizard died)? How did Giselle get her affliction?
Overall I did really like the book, and am excited to see the world continue in the series!

This was like gladiator meets dungeons and dragons with some love. Pretty fun to read.

Gladiator fights set in a magical world with corrupt leaders? I’m down. The pacing of this book was rushed at times and the writing was cheesy often, but it did cause me to feel emotional at times and rip my heart out. Bonus points for being a stand alone and not a series 👏🏼👏🏼

It was so mid and too long. Yet somehow the ending was rushed?
Overall it was ok, but the character building was limited.
