Loved this book! Dangarembga recounts the struggle of a strong young woman and her desire for education. Yet the book resists being a straightforward tale of moving up the Western ladder. Instead, it investigates the complexities of colonial powers, coupled with the struggle to survive.
Dangarembga’s prose easily and beautifully gave me a view into the life and perspective of her protagonist. They plot was simple but powerful. I felt the ending was a bit too abrupt and left too much unanswered- though I understand it sets up future books.

The quintessential African coming-of-age story. Feminism, education, racial struggles, against men, marriage, and the patriarchy, and against a disease called "Englishness".

amazing book! read for a class and it was a page turner. the way it was narrated so compellingly and cogently inspired me to reflect on my past and childhood. i was impressed and it felt extremely personal. the focus on the internal processes of coping with colonization was fascinating and sad. i felt very attached to the characters particularly the women.

Gives great perspective of Zimbabwean life in the 1960s and a woman’s place in it.
