A great read. Beautifully written. I read it while in high school as part of the reading for my literature class. It was the best book I've read through all my schooling. To think i sold it for a quick buck as soon as i was done reading it for the class. Mxi!

it was absolutely amazing. it got me out of my reading slump. enjoyed every single second of it.
this book is all in its final pages. it boils slowly. but it emerges from a fanon universe, so the last chapter is worth every word.

—¡Es bastante malo. —Me dijo con severidad— cuando un país es colonizado, pero es peor cuando su gente también es colonizada! Es el fin, en verdad, es el fin.

An arresting narrative of what it means to become a woman, against the backdrop of race and class. Should be required reading in every school.
"Perhaps I am being unfair to him, laying all this blame on him posthumously, when he cannot defend himself and when I have seen enough to know that blame does not come in neatly packaged parcels."
A young girl is growing up, fighting for (and winning) chances to learn and grow. Yet, she struggles with clash of cultures, worldviews, and power structures. She does not want to lose herself or be won over but struggles with identity.
It is too soon for me to react to this book- there is too much h to process- but it is powerful and I will be recommending it to others.

Marriage. I had nothing against it in principle. In an abstract way I thought it was a good idea. But it was irritating the way it always cropped up in one form or another, stretching its tentacles back to bind me before I had even begun to think about it seriously, threatening to disrupt my life before I could even call it my own.
Nervous Conditions is a brilliant book set in post-colonial Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) primarily addressing patriarchy, colonialism and identity. The themes are well covered in the book however I felt the narration was a bit flat. It wasn't until I got to the last chapters that I finally realized the message the author was trying to put across. The third book looks promising so I will probably continue with the series.
