a very interesting semi-autobiographical novel that explores themes such as race and gender in 1960s zimbabwe, then rhodesia. the focus on how colonisation affects an individual down to the level of interpersonal relationships and relationships with the self in this specific context was also explored through the fascinating characters of this story. tambu as a character was very likeable but ultimately also very frustrating, as she would often give into regressive norms (although from her perspective it made sense, to an extent).

overall this book is a great start to the trilogy
; however, i do wish nyasha's issues were explored better rather than wrapping up in a rush at the end. the mental debates and dilemmas from both nyasha and tambu were worth looking into in this regard.

(I'm in the wrong, but I just didn't connect to the story and don't really care for it)

I really enjoyed this story and was so engrossed. Though the themes within were serious and important there were many laughs through out.

If you think you have a hard life, try living in Africa and not having a fridge to keep your meat from going bad. And try having to sleep on your kitchen floor, which isn't just cold linoleum, but dung! I enjoyed the story and the narrative voice, but I had a little bit of difficulty seeing it from a black perspective that blames whites in part for being poor. Seems to me the narrator is still better off at the white school even if she isn't treated as well as the white students. At least she doesn't have to sleep on a dung floor! But I guess everything is relative. The more you see other people have, the more you feel you should have yourself.
