I really enjoyed the whole ethos of this book. It seems like exactly the sort of way I'm trying to live my life but now I have more concrete plans to fulfil it.
The book is set up like a reference book for Hygge which is great but I don't think it was well suited to an audiobook. There was some repetition and the recipes and lists don't work well (in my opinion) compared to a physical book where you could revisit them multiple times.
I did enjoy the scientific and political aspects of hygge and happiness discussed at the end of the book too, which seemed the perfect balance to justify the author's qualifications and reasoning for all of the links between these aspects of a hygge life and a happy one.
Listened on Libby through my local library.

When I first tried reading this book, I DNF'd it because it, at the time, read too much like a text book to me. But I bought the physical copy and tried again, and I enjoy it now. It still reads slightly too much like a text book to me, but I still enjoy it and will continue to enjoy it and get inspired by it.
When I asked my Danish mor and mormor what hygge is, they told me it's hard to explain because it doesn't translate into English. They also said that Americans will never really understand it. According to Wiking, they are among the 1/3 of Danes who believe these two things.
This book is very easy to read. Wiking is a little too upbeat at times, but can we expect anything less from a man who runs the Happiness Research Institute? Many of the traditions and activities he mentions align with the traditions and activities that brought me the most joy as a child, raised by a Danish mother. You don't need to follow every suggestion in this book (you especially don't need to spend a fortune on candles, socks, and sweaters) to introduce a little more peace and happiness into your life. Hygge seems to be closely related to mindfulness, and mindfulness costs nothing.
I will mention one omission from the Hygge Tour of Copenhagen: the walking street Strøget. I loved this street when I visited. My mor often talks about the joys of window shopping and there is no better place in the world to do that than on Strøget.
I would like to see Wiking address the size of the Danish population and the diversity of it. These could be important components of Danish hygge.
