Hygge is a state of mind and way of living that I’ve been striving for for years. This cute little book was a lovely quick read on how to live within the realms of a Hygge existence. And I loved it. That sense of how something feels rather than how it looks or what it costs is exactly right. I’m excited to continue to strive for a more Hygge way of life.

The first half of this book was delightful. Full of ideas of how to bring more (for lack of a better English word) cozy into your life, it presents the case for living more simply and with more emphasis on social interactions and relationships. It also talks about cake. A lot.

The problem lies in the fact that there was probably enough information for a nice long article, but it was stretched out into a book-length project. It got a bit tedious and repetitive in the last half. I bought this for kindle for $2. I definitely think I got my money's worth. However, with the formatting issues, I do think it would be more enjoyable (and more hygge) as a physical book. So, would I recommend it? Yes. With the understanding that it's a cute little book with some interesting information about attaining happiness, but a lot of it is just gimmick.

Hygge pronounced hooga, is more than a verb but it's a feeling. Hygge is all things comfort and togetherness.

“The most important social relationships are close relationships in which you experience things together with others, and experience being understood; where you share thoughts and feelings, and both give and receive support. In one word: hygge.”

I didn't realize it but I already have Hygge down. I could burn more candles as I haven't been a big candle person (mostly I'm just paranoid about burning ny house down). I will admit I love the light candles bring into the house, it does add a touch of comfort.

I love baking and cooking. I love hot drinks like tea and coffee. I also love Christmas and board games and hanging out with small groups of people. Seems like I already got Hygge down!

“Hygge is humble and slow. It is choosing rustic over new, simple over posh and ambience over excitement.”

I feel like this book could've been shorter. The author reiterates things a lot. The chapter The Five Senses of Hygge was pure filler in my opinion.

Yes, Hygge is interesting but for me I found the idea a little silly. That the Danes are so obsessed with it and actually rate places on the Hygge, doesn't rating your happiness automatically disqualify it? I think you know when you're truly happy but the obsession with it is a little much. I like the tips and definitely think there is happiness in slow, simple comforts but I also don't think it should be forced.  I personally want to add more candles to my home after reading this but most of the tips I already did. I think this could be useful to people, especially American society with our fast paced materialistic lifestyle. Overall this book was interesting and informative to someone who wanted to understand hygge, and had many tips and suggestions for implementing Hygge.

This really is the "little" book of Hygge. I'm not sure why I expected something more robust, but I did; and this was not it. This book is a Coles-notes-how-to of Hygge, and I think I was looking for something that went a bit more in-depth into the psychology of Hygge.

That aside, I also felt like the book was written out of order. The author jumps right in with a key element of Hygge in the ch1, and then in ch2 goes back and talks a bit about the origins of Hygge. Then returns to key elements of Hygge in Ch 3-7, seems to wrap it up with overall Hygge tips in Ch 8-10, returns to a key element of Hygge in Ch11, more overall Hygge tips in ch 12, concluding with a bit of the psycholgy of Hygge in ch 13&14. It didn't seem to have a lot of flow for me as I read through, which, as the author would say, was "un-hygglelige."

This book did affirm that I've been embracing Hygge most of my adult life without really realizing it; that being said, it didn't really add much insight for me in terms of new ways to intentionally practice a lifestyle conducive to Hygge.
fast-paced

I gave this a 3 star rating because while the subject/concept of Hygge is beautiful and something I’d like to emulate in my personal life this book was not an invigorating read. If there is a Ted talk on the subject by this author I highly recommend you take the time to hear him out. I did love the use of quotes throughout the book and the general feel but it wasn’t a page turner.
