Hygga is a lovely concept, and the book describes it well, if too much. For a little book, its length outlasted my enjoyment. I’m happy to understand hygga now, but I may not want to read about candles, homemade socks, and cooking parties again for quite some time.
A fun, pretty book about how to be a happy as a Dane. How often do Danes light candles? How many at a time? What makes them happy? What do they eat? What do they do? What is Hygge? “An atmosphere of coziness.”
Hygge wishlist-
1. A Hyggekrog- or nook
2. A fireplace
3. Candles
4. Things made of wood
5. Nature
6. Books
7. Ceramics
8. Think Tactile
9. Vintage
10. Blankets and cousins
I give myself a 7/10.

While this book has its charm, I found it overall to be repetitive and ultimately not very informative. It read like one of my high school reports from the 'oh whoops I haven't cited any sources in a while better throw in statistics' moments to the 'I need to get the word count up let's add some recipes, that'll do'.
Sidenote: turns out hygge is exclusive to meat eaters! If you don't eat meat, you can suffer! (I am kidding, obviously, but being told meat is a big part of the concept just made me raise my eyebrows; surely there must be some people in Denmark who don't eat meat. I mean, I can't for medical reasons and there's no way I'm the only one.)
While this was cute in places, I found myself skimming the last chapter just hoping for it to be over soon. Ultimately a waste of time for me.

I loved learning about the concept of Hygge, but I couldn’t help but to feel a little frustrated that our (in the US) culture makes finding hygge difficult. In a fast paced lifestyle, it can be so difficult to save time to relax and create things.
"The support stems from an awareness of the fact that the welfare model turns our collective wealth into well-being. We are not paying taxes, we are investing in our society. We are purchasing quality of life."
"Equality is an important element in hygge -- a trait that is deeply rooted in the Danish culture -- and also manifests itself in the fact that everybody takes part in the chores of the hyggelig evening. It is more hyggeligt if we all help to prepare food, instead of having the host alone in the kitchen."
"Hygge is about giving your responsible, stressed-out achiever adult a break. Just for a little while. It is about experiencing happiness in simple pleasures and knowing that everything is going to be okay."
As an avid sci-fi, thriller, and romance reader, you would not expect this cozy book to be in one of my favorites. It's no page turner nor epic storyline with a plot twist, but it's sweet and comforting; which is what the entire book is about. Hygge or, in my words, the science of cozy and comfy. I am definitely going to be adding Wiking's recommendations into my daily life and continue to pursue the (for some reason) revolutionary idea of slow living.

Felt more like someone trying to stretch out a blog post than a book. Repetitive. Very little information to learn from.

This book has a little of everything: background, recipes, and lots of goodness to go around! I enjoyed learning more about the idea of hygge and hope to have more of it in my life. :)
