Too raw to write a review. Brutal and heart wrenching in the most beautiful way. This book will stay with me forever.

Hated the ending. Had a lot of difficulty following the story - flashes through events in an odd way and from odd perspectives.

Beautiful. Devastating. Creative. Brilliant. I got this book in audio, and it started out interesting but slow. Before I knew it though, it had woven into my heart so that it was all I could think about. This is a must-read.

War is the great leveler, muses one of the two narrators of this book, as she ponders the bond she shares with her best friend. She is a Scottish aristocrat with a posh continental education; her friend, the granddaughter of a humble Jewish mechanic from Manchester.

These two young women might never have met, had the Second World War not intervened. But it did, and now one young woman is a pilot, and the other is a spy. And they make a sensational team.

With two of the freshest, most engaging narrative voices I've ever encountered, Code Name Verity draws on the amazing record of valiant service by young women during the war, to spin a beautiful and heartbreaking tale of friendship, bravery, teamwork, and intrigue.

What a delightful surprise that this little book by an author I'd never heard of has become my favorite book of many years; I have breathlessly recommended it to anyone I've come across in the last couple of months. The book is marketed as young adult fiction, but before giving it to a young person be warned that there are some descriptions of torture within and some very sad and traumatic events. I'll provide spoilers on request for anyone who wants to know more but instead of asking me you should read it for yourself, because it is wonderful, and then you can decide whether the young people in your life can manage it.

One final note: I listened to the audiobook edition from Audible.com, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. The voice actors who read the two women's narratives are amazing. They become real people - they become my friends, too.
