Where to start? Incredible worldbuilding, intriguing characters, beautifully written action sequences, and a good medium-pacing but fast when it needs to be. There some of every fantasy book subgenre crammed in here, I think, and every bit of it works together to make a symphony.

An excellent read, if somewhat slow pacing and cumbersome from the size of it. If this wasn't 1200 pages I would have said this is a medium paced book, but even being a fast reader it felt like I was crawling through.

The book has many ideas, probably too many which bog it down some. But, the world building is intriguing, so if that's something you enjoy then that should be enough to carry through. There's a small cast of characters to follow, though it doesn't make it feel less the epic for it. Most of these are characters you feel invested in, though unfortunately the one woman POV you follow throughout the book is the weakest of them all and I found myself losing interest in her chapters.

The writing is passable, which is what I have come to expect from B-Sandy. However, if you read through this fast enough you might get sick of seeing the word 'grimace'.

A true slow burn with impressive world-building and lore, the kind you can sink your teeth into and truly transport yourself to a world that feels entirely unfamiliar yet immediately knowable. Excellent characters that never feel unrelatable or overpowered relative to the dangers of their surroundings; prepare to be frustrated, enamored, and sympathetic to each of them at various points in the book. One of the best first books of a series I've ever read. Nothing is given easily and this books requires you to invest in the journey and trust that Sanderson is taking you somewhere special, and so far, it seems he is.
