Review:

"The Lady smiled and her mouth was beautiful and cruel." p.g 276

It was okay. This is a re-read. I have had this book for a while and read it when I was younger. I have little to say actually.

Mackie (Malcolm) isn't the most heroic character but he is trying his best, and living in a small town and trying to fit in. He is a replacement; people tip toe around the idea he is odd, but he does his best to remain "normal". I'm not sure how realistic he is but I didn't mind following him through the story.

The Lady swap babies for their blood rituals, and replace them with their own, unhealthy children. Mackie is one of those, and we watch as he tries to deal with it.

The characters work well. I liked the world the author was creating. The whole book is fine; this was the author's first novel, and I feel they did a good job. A lot of folklore is discussed, which was interesting.

A reference to Donnie Darko, which I completely forgot about, and there is a big part exploring how music can make people feel. The music element seemed to fizzle out as the plot progressed, but yeah, it's an okay read.

Maybe a trigger warning for gore, and blood.

*edit*

Having a think about it, I feel this is definitely a product of it's time. And so, the writing feels slightly off.

This is very hard to review because I love the idea much more than the actual book. Like any well written book, movie, song or even sex, it's supposed to have ups, downs and exciting builds on your way to the climax. Saying this book falls flat is an understatement. Everything is written at the same pace and urgency, or lack thereof, that the ultimate point of the book is disappointing. It's as if the base story is more exciting than getting to your answer/goal/point of the story because it's written so poorly. I really wish someone would take this story and rewrite it into what it could be.

My friend loved this book so I am sad to say that I thought it was meh. I thought the concept was good, but I feel like the author didn't explore or explain it enough. The whole relationship thing was a little annoying. The kissing and the drinking with the partying took over the plot. The people weren't creepy, they were gross almost to the point that I couldn't stand it. I thought they only really believable (human) character was Emma, the older sister. Sorry this is so general but I hate having spoilers in my review.

Well...weird. I'm a fan of weird but this was strange in a neo sort of way. I liked it though I'm still trying to determine if I *got* it.

really enjoyed this novel, thought i can see why a lot of people didn't like it. I like it because it show the darker side of things, when usually the writer write about the light, sugary sweet side.

This is certainly a strong case of don't judge a book by its cover. But in this instance, the cover is intriguing and the book is actually quite terrible. What a disappointment.

SYNOPSIS:
Mackie is not who others think he is. Sure he looks human but he's something more. He comes from a world under the city he lives in, a world full of living dead girls ruled by a tattoo little princess. When tragedy strikes and one of Mackie's schoolmates little sister dies,Tates, She fails to believe that the dead corpse was really her sister, and she turns to Mackie to help her prove it.

REVIEW:
I was excited when I started to be reading this book. Even though I didn't have major high hopes for it, I thought it would be a little bit better. I had expected a chilling, horrific novel, the novel was hardly what I had expected. You constantly find Mackie in the same situations (He gets sick, he's healed, he gets sick, he's healed, over and over). It wasn't until the last 60 pages that the action really started to get going and I kept flipping page onto page until the very end, for that I will give the replacement a "Small Heart Rating" (AKA 3 out of 5 stars).

AGE RATING AND RECOMMENDED TO:
Every now and then the reader encounters the occasional curse word, so for that I give the age rating a 13 & over. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a chill down there spine, but nothing even close to horrifying.

I really liked this book. It's a mix of a changling story and a touch of pinochio. All Macky wants to do is the one think he can't do...live a normal life and be like everyone else in his small town. The town has a secret though....everyone knows it, but no one will talk about it or do anything about it.

When one of Macky's classmate's sister dies and she seeks his help, Macky can't ignore the issue any more. He's forced to face what and who he is and must make some hard choices. Yovanoff doesn't shy away from the darkness and if your looking for a story with sweet and helpful faeries this is NOT the book for you, but it is an awesome coming of age story for a boy who is not quite human.
