I really wanted to like this book but I didn’t. I stopped reading it for a while and finally finished it. I like the idea of the book and the themes and it ended decently so it’s got that going for it.
Graphic: Alcoholism, Child death
this didn't quite work for me -- a lot of the pieces of the book felt disconnected from each other.

a reluctant 2 stars
i had certain expectations for this book, and it failed to meet most of them. i thought the main character was the one that the summary of the book focused on, but most of the chapters were about the other character who was presented as secondary. this book was fine for what it was literally, but it failed to meet about any of my expectations.
i will say on the positive side, the ending did resolve a lot of the feelings and storylines, but it wasn't necessarily satisfying. the ending did do what an ending is supposed to do as you learn in English class, but oh boy did i want more.
this was marketed as a horror book to me, and it was anything but. nothing scared me. most of the chapters are set in the past and don't appear to have a connection to what is supposed to be the main story for the longest time. i didn't like the characters, they weren't alive for me. i liked that the author had the trigger warnings, but those also didn't really feel right.
the fatphobia in this book is actually astounding. you published this in 2024 and still had that much hate toward something that even after getting the reasoning is still unwarranted? absolutely not. miss me with that bullshit. please never ever write about that again if you can't do it correctly and respectfully.
overall, i don't really recommend it. not worth the time to read especially with how it felt like pulling teeth to finish. it wasn't unfinishable, but it was rough there.

The Louie storyline was compelling, but the Noemi storyline never drew me in. If this would have just been Louie's story, this could have been a 3.5 or 4 out of 5 for me.
I won a copy of this book via a Goodreads giveaway. I took this book to the beach and could NOT put it down! The book tells the story of Louie and his niece Noemi through two timelines: in their youth and as adults. There are themes of past trauma, lost/squandered opportunities, and what happens when one is forced to face both of those realities. The story is interwoven with folklore from indigenous peoples which makes the story richer. I highly recommend this book.
I just didn’t fucking get it. Like I don’t get it at all. I didn’t like it, didn’t hate it. I just read it I guess. I’d barely call it horror, but then what would I call it? General fiction? Idk. Not for me.
I really feel like this one was about 1/3 too long. I enjoyed the historical timeline, as it was much more complete. The present timeline was just too little story to be told. In the end, I wasn’t satisfied with either timeline. I really wanted to live this book, but in the end, it fell flat.
