I got this book as part of a book exchange in my office at work.
My first impressions were that I thought the premise sounded very intriguing and original, and the first few chapters I was hooked. I genuinely wanted to find out why Flora's children hadn't appeared to have aged in the 12 years since her ex-best friend, Beth, had last seen them.
However, as the story unfolded, I felt that it got more ridiculous and more far fetched after every page. I also found it quite repetitive and a few things happened in the middle of the book which I thought were totally unnecessary and didn't really add anything to the book - (the 'incident' with Zannah's teacher, for example).
That been said, I can't deny the fact that I was kept in suspense throughout the whole book (hence the ⭐️⭐️⭐️) even if the second half of the book was so implausible. It turned out to be one of those typical, easy-read crime thrillers that I will probably have forgotten about by this time next week.

The hook is good. The rest of it? Not so good.
Actually very very bad.
Boring. Repetitive. Lame.
Nothing really happens. You spend a lot of time in Beth's head listening to her doubting herself then not doubting herself then doubting herself again. The threat doesn't feel real. I didn't care about any of the characters enough for it to feel like it mattered.
Skip it.

It’s an okay book. The overall premise of the mystery hooked me from the jump and then it was all down hill from there.
The main character was unrealistic and unsubtle in so many ways. The progression ofher developing suspicions to her basically stalking every other character was 0 to 100% in 30 seconds and it makes no sense. you could chalk this up to writing style, but I’ve never disliked a character so much before. I don’t think I was ever rooting for her as a singular character, except maybe at the very beginning. Even by chapter 2 I was hoping she failed in her endeavors and would never get her answers.
Whatever you think is happening in the book, I can almost guarantee it’s more interesting than what’s actually happening.

It was pretty slow honestly but I am glad I read it.

Sure am glad Beth held her love for an old friend close and kept pushing for the truth.

- fast paced and intriguing
- read really quickly
- hard to keep up with and confusing at times
- unsatisfying ending - could’ve taken so many other routes
- some parts just didn’t add up and were never explained fully
i.e. why were the kids taken out of school and apparently taken to live somewhere else but at the end it’s implied that flora has custody of them again? and why does she invite beth’s family to visit them on holiday ??? super random
