I used to like Jen Lancaster books. This one, though? Not believable, frequently clunky, hard to like characters, and both the big confrontation and the conclusion at the end just felt forced and fell flat. I liked her first half dozen books. They just haven't done it for me lately.
The first half was extremely long & drawn out. The action picked up from there. Not sure why I continued to read it as long as I did. Lancaster's memoirs continue to be much more entertaining than her fiction and that's not saying much.

What started out as a really annoying rant by a character I just could NOT take seriously (Kitty) actually turned out to be a really good book. Luckily Jack stepped in with her commentary right as I was about to add this to the DNF pile. The ending was a little surprising, but it fit. The story as a whole was predictable, but it wasn't the super predictable cookie cutter ending that I expected, so that was refreshing.
I did not give this book a chance at the beginning and now that I've finished it I can say that I actually really enjoyed it! Jen Lancaster has redeemed herself.
The first third of this book was so dreadful and confusing. I usually like books with flashbacks that give us the backstory, but the jumping back and forth was too quick and there were too many people for me to know what was going on. Perhaps because I was listening to the audiobook, and may have been distracted.
The second third was tolerable because I finally figured out who everyone was and what the heck was going on.
The third third was interesting and entertaining if not all together unique or unpredictable.
Kitty and Jacks relationship was fun to witness.

Overall I enjoyed this book. It was somewhat predictable and a little too heavy-handed on the Top Gun and Chicago references, but I liked the characters and the general story. The two-perspective narrator can sometimes be annoying but worked very well here.
