Love this look into Angela Merkel's life - specifically, I found her background before becoming chancellor, and her relationships with other world leaders (Obama, Putin, Trump, and Macron specifically) to be fascinating.

devoid of ego, driven to do what is moral and to find some fair common ground - what a rarity amongst national leaders.

I was very interested in reading this book altho I didnt expect that. As a Jew I have issues about Germany. I dont think I expected to finish this let alone to begin it. It is fascinating cause of the 16y in the history of Germany of Europe of USA (where I live) and she was Chancellor for that time. Governing in Germany is different as it seems there are some reall checks and balances so Chancellor is not role like our President.I really grew to admire this woman. What a tower of strength! And there are no fake news things about her. Its WYSIWYG (old phrase on computers what youhe see is what you get). Angela Larsen? I forget her first name before marriage. She grew up 16y in E Germany until the wall came down. She is obviously extremely intelligent and focussed and thinks like a scientist and she is in some ways a good politician and in others she failed around PR and being able to present a carefully designed image designed to win approval. )
She I believe is deeply regretful ashamed of the Nazi horrors the "jewish solution".
She made mistakes (is that the right word?) that brought back to her country the thinking the hatred that fueled the Nazi time for most in Germany and Europe and USA. In Germany now there is a party Alternative for Deutschland that seems to represent those in E Germany who say they were harmed by the end of the Wall and by Angela Merkle. What does puzzle me is that when Germany was reunited in itself there were things that were forbidden so that G could never again repeat the crimes of the Nazi Era. She fiercely stood up to the Autocrats like Putin and Trump.
I congratulate Kati Marton with this writing and I have been recommending this to others...

So interesting- especially living in Germany the past 12 years. The only shocking admission was her "victory" in controlling Putin over Ukraine.
