4 1/2 stars. This book is right up my alley. It was the perfect book to get my mind off of being sick in bed during summer break.

I loved this story! While I think the writing and the story could use a little more finesse, it would was such a wonderful, wholesome, uplifting book!!! I left it wanting to work harder and to be a better person. What a great read.
Speed through this book- really enjoyed it. Grew up watching the movies; book, of course, is different than the movies but a great book! Slow love, redemption, and faith filled book. Characters are strong and built to be likable and easy. Need to get my hands on the next one!
I probably would rate this book lower if I came to it as an adult, but I started reading Janette Oke in elementary school and I love her. Her style is very simple and sweet. She writes for adults, but everything is clean and nice enough for children. There is a charm to her writing, but also it's a style you can't look too closely at.
This first book is one of those love stories of a couple who are thrown together by circumstance, but slowly and softly fall in love without realizing it. I normally find that very cliched, but her reasoning for throwing them together was nice and had meaning behind it. Her sermonizing in this novel works into the story well. It is a quick little comfort read and I like it!

This is an older, sweet story. I originally read it about 25 years ago and enjoyed it then. I listened to the audiobook this time around. The story is mostly predictable and it is an easy, slow-paced book, so it is easy to listen to while doing dishes, folding laundry, etc. The narrator, Ruth Ann Phimister, is good - there are a lot of little background noises, but once I got used to them, I didn't notice them anymore.
One thing I do dislike about the book is the terrible grammar of the characters, it seems over the top bad and to hear it read out loud did grate on my nerves a bit. But not enough for me to not listen to the other books in the series. I started book 2, "Loves Enduring Promise." today.
Something I always appreciate about Janette Oke's books is the Gospel being shared. This is a very Christian story, and God, the Bible, and the Gospel are mentioned frequently. Faith is a very important aspect of most, if not all, Janette Oke's books.

Author is just not a compelling writer. I want to really like these good clean stories, but her writing is far too simplistic and frankly boring.
