I debating between whether to give this book a 4 or a 4.5, but as much as I enjoyed it, it hasn't really stuck in my head a few weeks after finishing it, so I think I'm going to give it 4*. As it is, it was the perfect, easy book to read while I was working on a rather stressful piece of coursework. I'll probably get around to reading the rest of the series at some point.

Love Comes Softly (Love Comes Softly, #1) by Janette Oke – I remember mom putting this book in my hands, and telling me I would love it. I think I was 12. Spoiler alert: Someone dies in the first chapter. I asked her why on Earth I would love a book that started off so sad, and she just smiled at my affronted annoyance. It’s one of those books that feels very much like an old friend. Happy Reading!

A really sweet story about finding love after tragedy.

I felt so bad for Marty - married to a stranger after the sudden death of her husband - but I liked how strong she was. She didn't let herself fall apart. She was a survivor.

Clark was really sweet to her and to Missie while also grieving himself. It was interesting to see Marty become more comfortable with him over time.

I also really liked that the last sentence of the book explained the title. It tied everything together nicely.

I didn't like this as much as When Calls the Heart (a much more lighthearted read) but this was still enjoyable and really sweet.

I read this series in high school and went back to read them again recently; just as the first time through, I LOVE this series. I read these long before watching any of the Hallmark movies and find them to be much better. Reading through the series feels like I am growing with the family and watching them all grow up. While it may seem a bit stereotypical, you can't help but hope for a happy ending for Clark, Marty, and Missie...

Best love story of all time!! A MUST read!!

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. Most Christian fiction is kind of "cheesy" to me. When I was a young teenager, I was given this series and tried to read this book then, but couldn't get into it. All these years later, I still have the books and decided to finally read them!

Fairly predicable, but cute and a fun easy read.

The first was heart-wrenching as Marty grieved the loss of her husband. The second was getting boring just waiting for when Marty and Clark would fall in love. I know the titles says "softly" but a little less soft would be good ... plus
Spoiler I get so anxious now when people have babies in books because a lot of times things go poorly. Luckily everything went well.

There were some good messages about faith in God and trust in his goodness and care. Here are some I noted while reading:

They wanted freedom fro oppressors; he came to give freedom from self and sin. (pg 188)

-A lot of times what folks ask fer, they don't need a'tall.
-Like what?
-Like good crops, new plows an extra cow or tow. He don't take away the hurt, but He sure do share it with ya.
-Wish I woulda had me someone to share mine with.
-He was there an I'm thinking that he helped ya more than ye was aware.
-But I didn't really know to ask Him to.
-I did. (Pg 189)

Well we're gonna pray and what he sees us to be needing he'll give. And what he sees we don't need, he'll make us able to do without. (pg 196)

Life was so confusing - the good mixed with the bad; such a strange combination of happiness and sorrow. (Pg 226)

This is a nice easy read if you're looking for something that's not too deep. The language can be somewhat plain at times, but it's a cute historical Christian romance.
