Beautiful Story
After coming across the movie adaption the other day I searched u til I found this book on the Australian Amazon site and was even more pleased to discover it on KU.
I will go on to read each book in the series now for I feel invested in each of the characters. I wept at the losses and smiled, giggles breaking free at the moments in the book where great joy was experienced.

I don't read much romance just because I know myself well enough to know it's not good for me to just read that and it can be hard for me to read something else after I start reading romance. But something I really appreciate about Janette Oke's books are that she doesn't show romance/love as cheap. I don't like how so much of the world today sees love as something that's honestly pretty temporary. I love this book and I love the fact that it's in a series. Janette Oke's books will always be favorites of mine, I love how she weaves really good values in to all of her books.
This book itself is just good. It's very clean (All of Oke's are), heartwarming, and such an easy read. I loved everything about the book except Marty and Clark's names. Like really, Clem and Emma were such pretty names and than you've got the stark Marty and Clark

I heard this was historical and a romance, so I read it in between heavier books. It wasn't written horribly nor do I hate it but I will not be continuing the series due the religious focus on the storyline.
I never thought I would see the day that I say "I like the movie better than the book." But it's true. I couldn't really connect to the characters at all. The story itself is cute, but some parts seemed rather boring. Part of me wants to continue reading the series but part of me is telling me not to bother.
I've wanted to read this series for a while now and I'm glad I'm finally getting to. One thing I'll say about this book, it's down to earth. No fluff. Nothing splashy, glitzy or highfalutin. Everything about this displayed a people of simple living, just trying to make it through one day at a time, loving life and each other, and I really liked that.
Out of all the deaths, I believe Laura's pulled my heart strings the most. I thought it was a needless death that could have been avoided.
I hate to compare the book to the movie, but there were some differences that I couldn't ignore. Missy's age for one, but toward the end I decided both movie and book were good in their own ways. I didn't care for the book's ending, even if I wasn't comparing it to the movie. I thought it was too abrupt.
Overall, an easy, enjoyable and fun read. Looking forward to book 2!

The GOLD STANDARD for Christian romance. Good grief, was this really Janette Oke's FIRST book?? Legend.
Is this "literature"? Nah. Is this a good book, with interesting characters and a plot that goes somewhere? Yeah! Is the "romance" (what there is) realistic? Yes. Is the Christian part not heresy? Also yes. Is the general setting and characterization of everybody not trash? Also yes!
Janette Oke is the Queen, Grace Livingston Hill is the Queen Mother, T. Davis Bunn is the reliable workhorse Duke of Somewhere, Francine Rivers is the party-girl princess cousin making headlines for questionable behavior, and the rest of y'all amish-quilt-romance authors are just the tacky relatives.
