I HATED this book when I was studying it because nothing fucking happens for 90% of it. Kids practicing a play, a headache, a dinner party, Robbie walking through France, Briony being a nurse, some made-up arguing. That's it. But the message of the novel - thoughtless actions having butterfly-effect-style catastrophic impacts on lives - has stuck with me two years later, so... Well done, I guess.

Super disappointed by the ending, especially when the beginning and the prose was great. I felt as if the novel was building up to something great and deflated at the very end.

after stewing over this book for awhile i’ve realized that the reason i gave it three stars is solely because of the ending. the pacing certainly could’ve been better overall but before the end ruined everything i would’ve given it 4 stars. just so unnecessarily abrupt and it almost seemed like it was just trying so hard to have an edgy or artsy ending. i feel like those aren’t the right words but it was dangling a certain ending into the reader’s face and then its like haha jk i hope you’re hungry…for nothing
