When they say Holmsian in the description they're not kidding. Was almost certainly a re-write of some old Johnlock fanfic from the BBC adaptation of Sherlock. The setting is interesting, but the mystery was weak and the style was not great.

compelling, mysterious central plot with a low spice, slow burn, second chance romance. some existential sadness that reminded me of the news and prompted me need to take breaks.

2 stars only because the world is compelling and layered.

My biggest problem was the prose, which often used long sentences and unnecessarily complex words. This was especially glaring in the dialogue - the characters did not feel like real people having real conversations.

I also did not enjoy the mystery or romance. Both felt like they were built upon foundations we could not see - the mystery upon knowledge of the world readers don’t have yet and the romance on the main characters’ past together. I constantly felt like I was missing something important, which led to the resolution of the mystery and the romance both feeling flat.

This book would be great for some, but unfortunately it just did not work for me.

The narration switched from third person in the prologue to first person for the rest of the story, and I spent a few chapters irritated and not compelled by Pleiti's perspective. However, as the mystery picked up and the shadows of the protagonists' relationship gave way to outlines, I was able to settle into the story. The setting on Jupiter was unique and the world building was sprinkled throughout, which offered another layer of discovery. The final chapter made significant contributions to the story, rapidly advancing and resolving many elements so deftly I felt more satisfied in the end than I had felt throughout much of the story.
