A clever and elegant sci-fi mystery in the tradition at Sherlock Holmes. There’s a lot of world building and some things, like the rail lines and the cozy scholar’s quarter’s really work.
I’d like to have seen a little more depth to the characters, but for a Holmesian mystery set on what appears to be an orbital ring around Jupiter, it’s exactly in line with what it sets out to be.
ARC provided by Tor and Edelweiss. All thoughts are my own.

I liked it, and I plan to read more books in this series. I thought the world - a post-Earth one - that it sets up is fascinating. I liked Mossa and Pleiti too, although they were detective novel archetypes in a way. That was really the biggest detraction for me: this novel was framed and toned like a golden age detective noire novel, and that style doesn't always vibe with me, I like it when it is a bit more modern.

Set in a far off future, we meet, Mossa. An investigator on Jupiter who's looking into the disappearance of a man from a distant platform. In order to do so, she seeks help from Pleiti, a scholar in the classics department.
She's also her ex.
The story is first person pov from Pleiti's perspective after the prolouge. I had a blast reading this. I am thoroughly impressed. I always fear sci-fi, but I always enjoy it when I pick them up!
I really love the development of Mossa and Pleiti's relationship. The shared past, the bank and forth understanding was giving Sherlock and Watson.
The set up of the classics department and their goal to recreate an ecosystem to set earth right made for high stakes at the end.
The investigation was fun to follow too! I wasn't fussing over my guesses as I went, but I was always intrigued as we learned more of the situation.
I wish I could read the next one right now. Alas. Especially with the cliffhanger on where the project stands now.

I had trouble getting into the world building at first but once I got the hang of it I devoured it very quickly! The mystery unfolded very satisfyingly. I did want to know more about the characters and their complicated past, which maybe made their reunion a little less cathartic than it could have been . Maybe I'll get more in the next book!
A Ripping Good Yarn. FourAndAHalf stars.
This novella has so many things I love, all artfully blended.
• A sapphic second chance romance.
• A Holmes & Watson detective story.
• A hard science fiction tale of the remnants of humanity clinging to survival perilous platforms above a gas giant.
• Thoughtful science fiction pondering the practical, spiritual, and ethical possibility of restoring the ruined ecology of spoiled earth.
• A jaded look at academia.
• First of a series.
