Beautiful prose mixed with brilliant character work. Truly fleshed out, doesn’t overstay its welcome, and provides a lot of worthwhile commentary on dysfunctional family relationships and the possible emotional effects of suicide on others. Many reviewers have been upset that “nothing happens,” and I can’t help but think they missed the entire story.

there's a very specific type of stream-of-consciousness, self-doubty traumatized egomaniacal mental illness babble that the author really captures here, and it hits you right in the gut and sticks there like an uneasy tummy ache. and i love it lol

I read this back-to-back with Everything I Never Told You, and they're incredibly similar, and I have the same issues with both of them. They both ooze "I'm 14, and this is deep." Like yes, there are a lot of gold nuggets of truth and interesting imagery, but it's not really saying anything. The main characters in both novels do a lot of thinking, but that's it. No growth, no change, and no hint that they're even headed in the direction of growth or change. The book has beautiful prose, but it's 100 pages longer than it needs to be, and I should've dumped it instead of finishing it. In fairness though, no one made me power through, and I think the quality of writing is better than the quality of plot and character development.

Little Weirds meets Gone Girl meets Edie Richter is Not Alone (which is a great read if you like this). Sentence after sentence that made me insane, subtle little turns of phrase so effective yet so minimalist that they rarely cross the line into overwrought, observations fresh enough so as not to be cliche but obvious enough that you can’t believe it hadn’t crossed your mind. Just really really good.

Elyria leaves her husband and travels to New Zealand to take up a stranger’s offer of accommodation - a way out of her depression over her sister’s suicide and her failed marriage. But, she and her plans start to unravel. A profound and melancholic portrait of a woman fraying at the seams. Started very strongly, but I did begin to lose patience with Elyria.
